IT professionals after Myanmar military coup

IT professionals – software engineers, DevOp technicians, IT startup companies, etc. in Myanmar are completely changing the course of their professional journey. Even the talented JavaScript developers, AI engineers, DevOp engineers from my network are now going underground, taking up arms and fighting back Military regime. Since no practical support from the West and UN, they can only rely on the domestic and foreign supporters within the community, 3D printed materials, launching online games that can generate revenues to sustain their armed revolution. It is completely different type of war going on at the other side of the world. Their belief, their determination to topple the military regime on their own are unparalleled to anything we have witnessed, yet still they are willing to give up their lives.

Six years in the past before coup in Myanmar were interlude of halcyon – a mirage of democratic transformation until new democratic government’s failure to diminish the underlying military authority, inability to listen and strengthen the voice of voiceless, and incapable of reconciling the federal States, yet the period was also astonishingly enough to nourishing the businesses capable to boom at unprecedented rate and embolden the younger generation to rise up and challenge the prejudice of religion influence in the society and culture that were very unsavory to them.

From the era of ex-Generals – Nay Win, Saw Maung, Than Shwe, Maung Aye, and Khin Nyunt, the country has become the breeding ground for authoritarian state of culture over the course of 70 years in the past. Those generals had committed some of the most heinous crimes in the history of Myanmar since World War II. Many of these victims were brutally executed; many more died from cold-blooded massacre. Recent military coup led by General Min Aung Hlaing carried out the similar crimes no lesser than the level of atrocity committed by his military predecessors. They all are murderers still at large.

We are entering into the 19 months of coup d'état. Business owners, professionals, high school children and colleague students, educators, revolutionists, activities, donors are looking for the answers – how long this revolution will last and what are the potential deviations and impact of the ongoing revolution. Multiple factors and variables are plugged into the calculation to formulate the equation.

I am also extremely concerned for the children and younger people who are unable to access to the sources of education and knowledge.

My philosophy and perspective are that education is just a reference; a map, and necessities; like shoe, umbrella, and clothing for our journey to walk on, but knowledge is the shining light that can guide you to the righteous path, validate and repair the foundation of education you had learned.

 Life has given us the lessons and knowledges to validate and strengthen the education we had learned.

An unjust law is no law at all

I've been quite reluctant to write about being a Myanmar immigrant not particular in the West but in everywhere especially while the county itself is plunging into political turmoil. I will not able to portrait the truth and complete picture of what it is like being a Myanmar immigrant because I find Myanmar had produced quite significant range of people – conservative, liberal, radical, nationalist, unpatriotic, educated, commoners, egocentric, altruistic, philanthropist, entrepreneur, and above all there are refugees and asylum seekers. One thing in common I have no doubt about it is that we all are at the receiving end of sympathy and curiosity by non-Myanmar people.

There are history of longest civil wars, the transition of democracy beacon in the past few years, and then Rohingya crisis that shone in front of international spotlight. One could possibly position oneself to articulate those stories in order to highlight what is going on in Myanmar, but still the most profound and heartbreaking stories of the citizens are buried under the waves of social media frenzy. On the other contrary, American culture – especially Hollywood and its writers are very good at resurrecting stories, events, and individuals from the past and highlighting them into media. They make people the most memorable and inspiring, and some martyr.

Tonight, I just happened to watch the movie called “The great debaters”. It didn’t disappoint me at all. When you are lost and need a moral and political compass to guide you through the darkest days of our time right now, this movie will provoke you some thoughts about what you’re fighting for.

Here are a few lines that I remember from the movie. “civil disobedience is a moral weapon in the fight for justice.” “An unjust law is no law at all. which means that You and I have the right, actually it’s our duty to resist with violence or civil disobedience. “

Myanmar - new frontier

November 8 2015, my wife and I, with no apparent plan, found ourselves on the outbound flight from JKF to Taiwan, and then to Myanmar. The decision going back to Myanmar was swift. My wife wanted to see her ailing father, and spontaneously it triggered my 12 years of nostomania finally exploded. It was also my birthday coincided with the day of election in Myanmar. Myanmar people, inside and outside of the country, were in high spirit during the final day of election. I had never thought it would become such a collective join force of sheer enthusiasm and exuberance to cast their votes. It was a clear sign that Myanmar people wanted a new democratic government. Emotions were high. Excitement was mounting higher and higher as time went by. Twenty hours flight from JFK to Myanmar seemed like a split second.

I wasn’t sure how things were in Myanmar except I could only visualize the facts I read from online over the course of a decade. The picture of flyover bridges and tall buildings were sprouting in the capital city of Myanmar. The last time I was in Myanmar was 2004, and this time I was prepared to embrace all the reactions and relationship from the people whom I loved so dearly, and I haven’t seen them for so many years.

Myanmar, an emerging new frontier from south East Asia region, was a new market to be explored, with a change of new government. Thailand was learning the process of how Myanmar had struggled toward achieving democratic government from dictatorship while Manipur and Nagaland were still struggling with their own internal agenda. Japanese companies were anchoring their businesses in major cities of Myanmar. English speaking Singaporean could easily be spotted in big shopping malls of Yangon. Especially, young Myanmar people were more vibrant than ever before. They were constantly learning and pushing their boundaries. As always, there were clashes between old eyes and fresh eyes of younger generation under the name of culture heavily overshadowed by religion. Clearly, Myanmar was moving along with the sudden shift of social paradigm. People were spending more time on online social networking web site and information, both fake and authentic, was flowing through unprecedented rate. It could become a major concern for capacity building if young people were hypnotized and occupied by virtual reality rather than physical activities.

There were voices of skepticism over new government and new politicians how they were going to handle the country in every aspect. Myanmar was locked in time for almost half a century, and went through different political stages. Wounded, but slowly emerging, democratic road map and visions were promised and set by new politicians. Even though most politicians in government seats were inexperienced to managing national scale level, Myanmar people were motivated by aspiration and high hope, and justified the process of transformation from old system to new system. Occasionally failed tactical implementation was disappointment for some people. Apparently, political movements demonstrated by politicians were still influenced by previous government. Government officials overseeing the bridge opening ceremony or chicken farm was still appearing on the national news as usual. Somehow, it was a reminder of their old scar from previous dictatorship and familiar political landscape.

Bureaucracy
 ==========
It was a bureaucracy that hindered the rise of market economy in Myanmar. Integration of government offices were never made to the reality. New laws were passed under new government, but those were practically clogging the pathway to fast pace business development activities. Old mentalities were still lingering on. Majority of government officials seemed to have the desire to change the old system, but they just didn’t know how to start and unable to break through the layer after layer of bureaucratic sediments, and eventually lost hope into the system.

 Infrastructure
===========
China was raised with massive implementation of infrastructure and domestic work force. India has prominent service sector in IT. It wasn’t clear how new Myanmar government will implement and layout a business model that will create more jobs and encourage the growth of small and medium businesses. Crony business empires were still at large. Project plans to implement major highways that will potentially knit between major cities from East to West and North to South were not there yet. Most of the region were still culturally divided, especially highland and lowland, while some remote areas, where minority ethnic groups were living, were virtually inaccessible and isolated from major cities. Their culture and the way of living were unknown to most Myanmar people.

Income Inequality
==============
Income inequality was everywhere, even in the most advanced and constitutionalized countries. Myanmar was no exception in that aspect, instead much higher in general per capita ratio. During my eight months stay in Myanmar, I had to struggle to balance the expense of basic necessities for daily life and income. The gap was even wider for common laborers and lower middle class families who were the majority of the entire population of Myanmar. Job opportunities were sacred, and service value from common laborers was under appreciated. But, there was a glimpse hope for younger generation because of the growth in banking sector, tourism, and positive momentum in IT industry.

Ethnic/Internal conflict
=================
There were different perspectives on the conflict between local residents of Rakhine division and overdue Bengali immigrants. The conflict was already there long before I was born when Myanmar was prosper, but only came into light in these recent years after it became out of control from local authorities. People poured in their reaction with a mix of national sentiment and religion point of view. While widespread rioting and clashes between Rakhine Buddhists and Muslims were happening at the Western flank of Myanmar, Eastern end of Myanmar border was wide open for Chinese business men. From North to East along the border line, drugs and weapons were smuggled in from India and China, and out through Thailand to the other parts of the world. Myanmar government was already losing its ground and sovereignty over a few guerrillas and Wa army who were controlling some areas at the border line with their own armed force and fortress. At the same time, open highway from Yunnan province was just waiting from China side to connect with Myanmar at any given time. It was a challenging task for new government to find resolution for internal conflicts and union of minority ethnic groups and majorities. There was a resentment of ethnic minority group for being isolated and inferior of majority cultural domination.

After all, it was the most wonderful time staying in Myanmar and working with young talented people. I always have a positive outlook for everything I see, and it worked in every aspect of my life. I hope the same positive channel exuding and will connect with other people too.

Myanmar is on the road to recovery. When it is a long road and things are not clear to foresee the outcomes, I’ve developed the practice of breaking down into smaller pieces of outcomes and plug into different time frames as I planned my life in every stage. I’d see the Myanmar the same way in every slot of time frame and will pave the way to positive change. I’m still contemplating how long that time frame might be.

Moral value and Rule of law

I've been following all the news sources about recent series of violence clash between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar, I observed the fact that how individuals and the country, itself, as a whole, could be so fragile and degrading value, beneath the underlying moral landscape, during dictatorship government. When I express my opinion, I solely based on my observation over the course of my whole life and, of course, myself as a Burmese man who grew up in Myanmar under the influence of traditional Buddhism which is Theravada and also others superstitions. I don’t represent any group or organization, and I also don’t represent any religious group and practices, but I, myself, alone judging with my own experiences and voicing out my love and concern over my own country affairs.

I love learning and knowing different cultures. I’m also not shy away from speaking others languages and engaging myself into different cultural and religion practices. I’ve always assumed myself as a liberal man who can adopt and transform oneself into anything. I think it is tremendously liberating, but this might probably make me a quite different man than others, or perhaps a rebellion one under the eyes of my parents and some conservatives. I personally don’t think being a liberal is a good way for everyone, but declining fundamental morale and morality value behind the closed curtain of dictatorship for more than 40 years is definitely need to be liberated. I know some conservatives will have their defensive mechanism kick in and say people are doing fine in Myanmar. In fact, they’re not fine. I’d cried and choked with tears over many occasions every time I see tragic pictures of the life of my own people.

We, civilized human beings, are always being governed by our faith and belief guided by the basic principle of moral education, and the rule of law imposed by governing body within the community or the country we’re living in. The dichotomy between moral value and rule of law has to be balanced, and we make our own judgment and live our daily life in accordance with those two principles.

Generally, religion provides us moral education since childhood to understand right and wrong, and to distinguish between good and evil. It also provides codes of conduct and becomes a part of cultural practice of the whole community. For example, every Burmese people knows they’re supposed to behave and humble in front of senior people regardless of different culture and religion. That’s how we learned our moral value and codes of conduct from school, or from bed time stories.

Faith and belief are always part of human life even before religion becomes a form of doctrine into our civilization, and it will always be. Human beings are generally not strong enough when it comes to face with challenges in this sophisticated civilization. The more sophisticated civilized we are, the more challenges we have. Thus, people find themselves refuge into the presence of religion when they can no longer cope with those challenges. Well, not all the religion practices can solve all the problems that we have- famine, inequality, human rights, job security, freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, freedom from fear. None of those issues will never able be solved by religion principles. Our civilization has grown into so much of sophisticated community.

On top of religion principles, there’re so much of superstitions blended together into Burmese culture. Giving opportunities to our citizens with access to all the information of outside world and exposure to different cultures will enable them understanding and respect to different religions and cultures. The majority of educated younger generation are already in the transformation of changes, but the stronger will to eradicate the whole superstition point of view is still a long way to go. The education system, media, cultural exchanges are definitely needed to be in place and reevaluated.

The rule of law, on the other hand in this democratized society, has to be applied and enforced people, and institutions are subject to and accountable to law. The law is not to be abused by the government nor to confine its citizens. The purpose of the rule of law is to promote confidence in people and protect them from basic human rights. It must ensure the commitment of well-being and to improving people lives. In an environment where rule of law is weakening and unstable, it creates worries and insecurities. Citizens are naturally projecting their lives with religion point of view or being distracted with religion disputes when the law is not protecting them. (This might not be the same scenario for other cultures, different religion practices, and in different governing system. The uprising of Arab spring in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, and the civil uprisings in Bahrain and Syria will have to be assessed differently than in Myanmar).

When I tried to make my living in Myanmar a few years back, I always have this morbid fear every time I have to deal with government personnel. I have no problem with them personally. I empathized them. I love them. It is just the structure of the whole system is so difficult to engage with them. I felt like we’re living in a small room and at point suffocated with so much of egocentric view of life and everyone is trying to find every opportunity of small window to breathe in to sustain their life. In the end, I’m the one dying without vital sources of life such as foods, art, creativity, health, new philosophy, new idea, and most importantly the ambition to do the things that I’ve always wanted to. If any misfortune fall onto me such as loosing job, terminal cancer strike, or become a victim of crime, I knew that the law will not protect me and government system is not ready to rescue me.

I struck a thoughtful conversation with one of my dear friends while she is briefly visiting in New York, she said that everything in Myanmar cannot be viewed formally in which she meant of the system and process. You have to think and react in a way that you usually don’t think. We ridiculed the leadership and their mindset incapable of managing the country affairs.

The very fabric of Burmese society has to be reconstructed with concrete foundation of rule of law and cohere those principles into every government organizations and individuals. When government system doesn’t have adequate transparency and the rule to protect its citizens, the aspect of people on recent conflict between Buddhists and Muslims is subliminal propaganda.

So FIX it.

Just the day after election in Burma, Republican senator, Mitch McConnell, sent out a message to renew the support for Aung San Suu Kyi and democratic forces within Burma, in a statement to US President Obama. Yahoo has the news, http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/myanmarvoteussenate, and Americans are pouring their comments with anger and concern as if republicans are pushing President Obama to go to war with Burmese junta just like President Bush invaded to Afghanistan.

I personally think the word "to get tough" is confusing and signal to misunderstanding on how United State government should support to democratic forces in Burma. I am a Burmese who work in US and contributing tax to the United State government, I do want to overthrow Burmese military regime with continuous support from United State government, but it doesn't necessarily mean to invade Burma with the tax I am paying for. I also don't think US is in the position to engage another military act during the public outcry over the spending tax payer money in Afghanistan war.

Mitch McConnell’s support to renewing a ban on imports from Burma earlier this year, I believe this is an urge to the President Obama to put more weight on pressure to military regime; to free Aung San Suu Kyi and all other political prisoners, to send strong signal to Burmese junta and international community that United State government shall only recognize fair election process in Burma. We don’t want to see Burmese dictatorship is being infused and injected by Chinese military influence. The claws of Chinese dragon are stretching out on the world’s map.

Remember, Burmese military regime has capability to conceal the truth elements inside the country and tricked United Nation and other ASEAN counties several times, so they can prolong their ruling power more than 20 years.
